Financial services in Hong Kong is becoming more digitalise, using more technology in its delivery (Fintech). The introduction of stored value facilities (commonly known as e-wallets), Faster Payment System and biometric authentication technology may bring convenience and change how we use financial services. At the same time Fintech may also be challenging for some retirees to use.

In 2018, we appointed the Sau Po Centre on Ageing of The University of Hong Kong to study how mature adults aged between 50 and 69 manage their money. About 60% of the respondents in the study were willing to learn about Fintech. They agreed that they could develop more confidence to use new technologies if there are resources to educate and guide them. Please click here for the details of study.

In this regard, the Digital Financial Services Workshop is specifically designed for retirees to learn about the application of some common Fintech services. The workshop uses simulation games which allow retirees to experience the applications of e-wallet and biometric authentication.

The Digital Financial Services Workshop was piloted to assess its impact in the first quarter of 2019. The major findings are listed below:
