Starting from 2014, the Mainland and Hong Kong regulators made a concerted effort to establish Mainland-Hong Kong Stock Connect, and launched the Shanghai Connect (Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect) in 2014 and Shenzhen Connect (Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect) in 2016. With these trading links, Hong Kong and overseas investors can directly trade the Shanghai and Shenzhen A-shares while Mainland investors can directly trade Hong Kong stocks.
In July 2022, Stock Connect was further expanded to include eligible exchange-traded funds (ETFs), allowing Hong Kong and overseas investors to trade ETFs listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) and Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE), and those from the Mainland to trade Hong Kong-listed ETFs.
